Lecture Title: Writing Clear E-Mails and Business Letters

Since business letter writing involves two-way communication, it is important for your messages to be polite and easy to understand. This is the best way to generate good-quality responses (answers) from your readers and to maintain a feeling of cooperation. This lecture will focus on two or three sample letters and exercises to demonstrate communicative writing. Please feel free to ask questions during the lecture.

Professor Hird’s philosophy or approach to business letter writing:
Business letters should reflect a positive, natural sounding and somewhat personalized writing style regardless of the letter content—whether good news, bad news or simply routine information. Unnecessarily formal or official-sounding letters create barriers that slow down quick-return communication.
